5 GHz versus 2.4 GHz
The 2.4 GHz band usually reaches farther and may pass through obstacles better, but it is often more crowded and has fewer non-overlapping channels. The 5 GHz band commonly supports higher throughput and can be less congested, but its effective range may be shorter. Actual results depend on router design, neighboring networks, building materials and device capabilities.
Choose by signal quality
Use 5 GHz when the device receives a stable signal and testing shows consistent performance. Try 2.4 GHz if the TV is far away or separated by several thick walls. Do not judge only by the Wi-Fi icon: a strong signal does not guarantee an uncongested channel, and a fast result beside the router may not reflect performance in the living room.
Practical test
If your router exposes separate network names for each band, connect the streaming device to one band at a time and test the same content at the same location. Compare startup time, pauses and stability over several minutes. If the router combines bands under one name, its steering behavior may choose the band automatically; check the router and device documentation before changing settings.
Other ways to improve reliability
Move the router into an open, central position, elevate it, reduce obstacles and keep it away from sources of interference where practical. For a fixed television with persistently weak coverage, Ethernet or a properly placed access point may be more effective than repeatedly changing Wi-Fi settings.
